All external woodwork fades to a natural grey shade over time due to the UV rays in sunlight which destroy the lignin in wood. Many love this natural grey look, but for others who wish to retain a colour that is closer to the freshly finished shade, we recommend Osmo UV Protection Oil extra 420.

This has been developed to maintain the wood’s natural colour and slow down the natural greying process. The Osmo 420 product gives a UV protection factor that gives 12 times protection when compared to an untreated timber. It is the perfect clear protection oil for vertical timber including windows, doors, cladding and fencing. It is not recommended for use on flat horizontal surfaces such as decking and especially not on garden table tops because of its anti-fungal ingredients. For these applications, we would recommend Osmo 410, which is safe for animals and humans once dry.

Based on natural oils this microporous, breathable finish will not flake, crack, peel/blister and is water and dirt resistant. Osmo 420 UV protection Oil is moisture regulating and reduces swell and shrinkage of the timber.

Osmo extra 420 clear brings out the natural character of the wood and gives emphasis to the wood grain. It contains biocides to protect the wood from algae, mildew and fungal attack. It’s not for use with plants, toys and table tops etc. For these Osmo advise Osmo 410 UV Protection Oil Clear which is safe for humans, plants and animals once dry.

For maintenance simply clean and re-oil, no need for sanding before applying future applications of Osmo 420 UV Oil.

TIPS

For exotic wood species that are naturally rich in oil such as Cedar, Iroko, Teak and Mahogany etc, please allow a minimum of 12 weeks exposure in situ to the outside elements prior to the application of the Osmo 420 Oil. This is to season the timber first.

Osmo UV Protection Oil 420 is recommended only for vertical timber (minimum drip angle of 10 degrees). This enables the rain to drip off rather than remain on the timber surface for prolonged periods of time.

Apply thinly, do not over apply as this and/or poor ventilation can increase the drying times.

Osmo colour stains contain colour pigment suspended in clear oil which helps to block out the UV rays and so these colour stains slow down the greying process. Osmo UV-Protection Oil protects timber almost invisibly as it contains special ingredients that stall the greying effect by 12 times (UV factor 12).

For a reliable UV protection, the Osmo wood finish should be maintained annually to keep the oil topped up but be careful not to over apply it. The recommended application is 55ml per square metre.
Some customers will prefer a wood finish that does not contain biocides that prevent alga and fungal growth – For these customers, Osmo recommends the Osmo UV Protection Oil Clear 410.

When oiling exterior oak surfaces more frequent care & maintenance is required especially during the first couple of years. This is because the high acid content of Oak’s natural tannins can cause it to blacken during exposure to very cold moist and exposed environments. This is particularly the case in winter, in high rainfall areas and areas exposed to Atlantic coastal conditions.
